*UPDATED* DEATHLY HALLOWS FAQ: READ BEFORE POSTING ANY QUESTION
Long time no FAQ update! My internet has been wonky, my apologies.

Hello, newbies! We've been getting a lot of questions about what happens to specific characters in the leaked book, as well as what certain things may/may not be. This FAQ is to answer your questions. Here is how I'm going to do it. I'm going to post some bare bones facts, and in the comments, you can ask more specific questions, which I will then add to the FAQ. Here we go, eh?

ALSO, A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE FOLLOWING LJ'ERS THAT MADE THIS FAQ POST POSSIBLE BY ACTUALLY *ANSWERING* THE QUESTIONS. I JUST TYPED IT ALL TOGETHER. (If you helped with this, comment!!! and I will add you)

MAJOR EFFING SPOILERS I AM ONLY WARNING YOU ONCE

1. WHO DIES (CHRONOLOGICALLY, THANKS TO A LOVELY PERSON BELOW)?

</font></font>The Muggle Studies teacher Charity Burbage
Hedwig
Mad Eye
Scrimgeour
Bathilda Bagshot
Ted Tonks
Pettigrew
Dobby
Grindelwald
Colin Creevy
Crabbe (killed in the Room of Requirement by his own spell, which causes a fire)
Fred Weasley (killed when a wall is destroyed by a DE in final battle)
Lupin
Nymphadora Tonks
Snape
Nagini
Bellatrix (pwned by Molly)
VOLDIE

+ 50 people on Harry's side that are unnamed.

2. WHAT ARE THE SEVEN HORCRUXES, AND WHY IS THERE ONE TOO MANY?

Slytherin's Locket
Hufflepuff's Cup
Ravenclaw's tiara
Nagini
Harry
Riddle's diary (destroyed in CoS)
Gaunt's ring (destroyed in HBP)

Dumbledore knew, but didn't tell Harry, that Voldemort's multiple acts of soul-tearing had made his soul unstable. That caused a piece to break off when he was hit with his rebounded killing curse. That piece "found the only living thing in the building and attached itself."

Thus, Harry is an accidental Horcrux.

3. DOES <INSERT MINOR CHARACTER HERE> DO ANYTHING?

The answer is probably yes. Check alphabetized names for more info.

Buckbeak - Buckbeak is mentioned briefly as helping in the fighting at Hogwarts, but he is not mentioned again.
Filch, Argus & Mrs. Norris - We do not know what happens to Filch and Mrs. Norris and whether or not they survived the battle at Hogwarts.
Finnigan, Seamus - Featured throughout the book and fights in the final battle.
Fletcher, Mundungus - Stole the locket Horcrux from 12 Grimmauld Place and sold it to Umbridge. Also protects Harry in the Guard at the beginning. Also caused the death of Mad Eye when he freaked out and abandoned his post.
Jones, Hestia - Helps escort the Dursleys away from Privet Drive.
Jordan, Lee - Lee hosts Potterwatch, the rogue radio show that supports the Order and Harry.
Krum, Viktor - At Bill and Fleur's wedding, that's it.
McGonagall, Minerva -
She's teaching at the school, trying to keep her head down and act as a shield between the children and the Death Eaters in charge (Snape as Headmaster, the Carrows as a pair of teachers/punishment enforcers). She doesn't come up much until the end, when she helps Harry a little as he searches for a Horcrux. She then drives Snape out of the school and takes a lead role in organizing the defense of Hogwarts for the big final battle.
Ollivander - Interrogated by Voldemort due to knowledge about wand cores, and later imprisoned. Harry and the Trio talk to him at one point, right before he is rescued by them during his imprisonment with Luna at Malfoy Manor.
Parkinson, Pansy - Pansy Parkinson is mentioned near the end of the book. When Voldemort tells the school that he will let them live if they give up Harry Potter, Pansy is the one who screamed out that Harry was there and they should give him up. The Slytherins are taken out of Hogwarts after that, along with students from other houses. After that, there is no mention of her.
Prince, Eileen - Mentioned only in passing.
Skeeter, Rita -
Skeeter's back in a way, she doesn't make an appearance but her writing certainly does. She has a scandalous tell-all book about Dumbledore.
Slughorn, Horace - Slughorn becomes Head of Slytherin. Slughorn chooses to stay and fight Voldemort. At the end, Voldemort duels McGonagall, Slughorn, and Kingsley all at the same time.
Vane, Romilda - Not mentioned.
Weasley, Charlie -
Not around much. He's mentioned briefly while the Trio are still at the Burrow.... yes, he fights: he helps lead a group of wizards to the battle at Hogwarts. He survives.

4. DOES <INSERT SHIP HERE> HAPPEN?

Harry/Ginny
- Yes, they kiss in the book, and it is implied there is still something there. In epilogue, they have three babies - James, Lily, and Albus Severus.
Ron/Hermione - Yes, they also have a kissing scene, and they also get together and in epilogue have two kids, Rose and Hugo.
Neville/Luna - No. Debunked by JKR.

5. WHY IS THE PAGE COUNT WRONG OMG IT'S FAKE, ETC.

Page count includes blank pages. Stop flipping out. It checks out, dude.

6. WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT HARRY'S EYES?

Nothing magical. Harry's eyes are reminiscent of Lily's, which is very important to Snape, among others.

7. ARE GHOSTS MENTIONED?

Yes. We learn the history of Ravenclaw's ghost, the Gray Lady, and Slytherin's ghost, the Bloody Baron.

8. WHAT ABOUT SIRIUS?

Harry searches Sirius's room at Grimmauld Place. He finds a letter written to him from Lily about baby Harry. When Harry uses the Resurrection Stone at the end of the book, Sirius comes back as a ghost-like figure, more like the ghost of Tom Riddle than other ghosts. He tells Harry that dying doesn't hurt. He follows Harry into the forests, then disappears abruptly when Harry drops the Stone. That is the last we hear of him.

9. ARE THERE INFERI?

Mentioned and discussed on several counts, but we don't ever battle them.

10. WHO IS THE CHARACTER WHO PERFORMS MAGIC THAT WOULDN'T NORMALLY?

This didn't show up. More than likely, since JKR said this in 2000, she since changed her mind about including it, or, the character was Merope in HBP.

There is some speculation that this could also be Trelawney or Ariana.

11. WHAT ABOUT PETUNIA?

Petunia is revealed to have loved Lily very much. She didn't always hate magic, and in fact was desperate to go to Hogwarts despite her lack of magical abilities.

12. WHO IS RAB?

Regulus Arcturus Black.

13. WHAT ABOUT DUMBLEDORE?

Lots of influence, lots of info, appears at one point but is 100% dead.

14. WHY IS LILY SO GOSH DARN IMPORTANT?

Snape was in love with her. She was the reason he betrayed Voldemort.

15. WHAT ABOUT NEVILLE?

Neville kills Nagini. This is cool. In the epilogue, he is Herbology professor.

16. SNAPE: GOOD/BAD/EVIL/SATAN?

Great, it turns out. Totally redeemed. Dumbledore's death was orchestrated between the two of them as after Dumbledore touched Marvolo's ring he was cursed and only given one year to live. Therefore he wanted to plan his death carefully. Snape was a loyal man through and through.

17. THE MALFOYS, WHAT HAPPENS?

Narcissa helps Harry defeat Voldemort to save her family. They all live. Draco goes on to procreate in the epilogue and have a kid named Scorpius, but the identity of his wife is unknown. Lucius escapes from Azkaban at the beginning of the book in a mass breakout orchestrated by Voldemort, and is mentioned in the first chapter.

18. WHAT HAPPENS TO LUPIN/TONKS?

They're married. She's pregnant. She has the baby, and the whole time Lupin is having a freakfest. In the end, they reconcile, before dying and leaving their child, Theodore Remus Lupin, an orphan. He is never mentioned as being specifically raised by anyone, but he is over at the Potters "4 times a week" to quote the epilogue. They both die at the Battle of Hogwarts, though by whose hand and how is not revealed.

19. WHO IS VICTOIRE WEASLEY?

Bill and Fleur's daughter, in the Epilogue.

20. WHAT ABOUT HOUSE UNITY?

Complete and total house unity never takes place, though in the epilogue it does seem that the houses (might...?) be a tiny bit more united. The three houses except for Slytherin (predictably) are united in the final battle.

21. WHAT ABOUT THE VEIL AND THE LOCKED DOOR IN THE DEPT. OF MYSTERIES?

Doesn't come into play at all. Confirmed! Locked door, still locked.

22. WHAT ABOUT LUNA?

Luna is present throughout the book, though not as much as she's been seen before. She lives through all the hubbub. At one point she is captured by DE's and imprisoned due to some of her father's publications in the Quibbler. She later breaks out when the Trio and herself are in Malfoy Manor.

23. RIMULUS?

Hellz no. Lupin does use the codename Romulus though.

24. WHAT ARE THE DEATHLY HALLOWS?

The Deathly Hallows are three objects in a wizarding fairy tale, "The Tale of the Three Brothers." The objects are Harry's  Invisibility Cloak, the Elder Wand (which is the most powerful wand ever made) and the Resurrection Stone (which can restore anyone to life). A person who has all three of the Hallows is, according to the story, the master of death.

More details on the Invisibility Cloak:

Harry inherited it from the original owner, Ignotus Peverell. It's the only cloak that doesn't lose its invisibility properties through time and that will never fail to hide its wearer (as long as he is completely under the cloak, obviously).

25. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE DURSLEYS?

The Dursleys leave. We are never told where, but it is implied that they never return to Privet Drive.

26. WHY IS THERE A DRAGON ON THE COVER OF THE SPECIAL EDITION?

Ron, Harry, and Hermione ride the dragon (who was guarding Gringotts treasure) and break out of Gringotts. The dragon drops them off in the countryside.

27. PATRONUSES - WHO'S GOT WHAT?

Lynx - Kingsley Shacklebolt.
Doe - Lily Evans, and Snape adopted her patronus after her death.
Horse - Ginny's patronus is not seen in the book but Rowling has said that her patronus is a horse.
Goat - Aberforth Dumbledore.
Weasel - Arthur Weasley
Hare - Luna Lovegood
Boar - Ernie MacMillan
Fox - Seamus Finnigan
Jack Rusell Terrier - Ron
Otter - Hermione

28. WHY ARE THE ROBES ON THE UK EDITION SO ORNATE?

Hermione takes Polyjuice Potion to become Bellatrix. Thus, she wears an outfit appropriate of Bella. Hermione transfigures Ron into and old dude, and he wears the apporpriate clothing.

29. HOW DOES SNAPE GET TO BE HEADMASTER, AND HOW IS HE SACKED?

Snape is appointed Headmaster by Voldemort, who has taken over the Ministry. He is sacked when McGonagall and other teachers attack him when trying to protect the school.

30. DOBBY, WINKY, KREACHER - HOUSE ELVES GALORE?

Dobby is killed when Bellatrix throws a dagger at him as he is Apparating with Harry. He dies looking into Harry's eyes. Harry then hand digs his grave, with no magic.

Winky we assume comes in with all the other house-elves during the Great Post-Battle-of-Hogwarts-Magical-Creature-Revolt, where all those centaurs and house elves make their play to subdue the death eaters.

Harry is super-nice to Kreacher and then Kreacher actually becomes the coolest house-elf ever. We find out Kreacher only betrayed Sirius because Sirius was such a dick. Kreacher fights for Hogwarts at the end.

31. WHO IS THE BOOK DEDICATED TO?

Six members of Rowling's family and to "us" who stuck with Harry all along.

32. WHERE DID NEVILLE GET THE SWORD OF GRYFFINDOR IN THE FINAL BATTLE?

It fell on top of him when Voldemort put the Sorting Hat on top of Neville's head. Something like with Harry in CoS.

33. WHAT ABOUT UMBRIDGE?

She is important because she possesses the locket Horcrux.

34. PETS - CROOKSHANKS, PIDWIDGEON, FAWKES ETC.?

Mentioned, but very briefly (to all).

35. HOW/WHY DOES UMBRIDGE GET THE LOCKET, AND WHAT MAKES MUNDUNGUS GIVE IT TO HER?

She uses the locket to make her seem like she comes from a pureblood family. The "S" on the locket she explains by claiming it came from a pureblood family called Selwyn. She told Mundungus she would turn him in if he didn't give it to her.

36. WHAT DOES RON DO?

1) Ron goes with Harry/Hermione on quest of Horcrux/Hallows.
2) Ron leaves/deserts Harry/Hermione when he gets pissed that they aren't making any leads. Apparenlty, the locket horcrux was affecting his mind.
3) Ron comes back and saves Harry's life.
4) Ron opens the Chamber of Secrets using Parsletongue he mimicked from Harry's voice in the when Harry retrieved the locket.
6) Ron and Hermione get married and have a daughter named Rose and a son named Hugo.

37. WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF GINNY BEING THE 7TH CHILD AND ONLY DAUGHTER IN THE 7TH WEASLEY GENERATION?

None...wow. (Note: Question was asked, I put it in, even though it's bizarrely worded. JKR did mention it in an interview though.)

It is brought up in the book when the locket horcux deceives Ron, however.

38. WHY IS WORMTAIL KILLED BY HIS SILVER HAND?

It kills him because he failed to kill Harry. He is strangling Harry when he (Harry) reminds him of his life debt. He immediately releases Harry to his own surprise. After a few seconds, when Ron takes his wand, his hand turns upon himself and chokes him to death, although Ron and Harry try to prevent it.

39. DOES THE FLYING CAR FLY AGAIN (AKA REAPPEAR), AND WHAT ABOUT THE MOTORCYCLE?

Car is a no, but the motorcycle is still in Hagrid's possession, and he uses it with Harry to escape from Privet Drive.

40. HOW DOES VOLDEMORT TAKE OVER THE MINISTRY?

Voldemort at first Imperios a couple of the Ministry works, and that, in turn, leads to more Death Eaters being hired for Ministry jobs. He then gets a man under Imperius as Minister of Magic, and it all went downhill from there.

41. WHAT ABOUT GIANTS, CENTAURS, GOBLINS, ETC?

All three play a big role in the book. A goblin helps Harry break into Gringotts, but then makes off with the sword of Gryffindor. Centaurs help Harry fight in the battle at Hogwarts. Giants fight against Harry in the battle of Hogwarts, except for Grawp.

42. IS THE DA BACK?

Yes. Neville reinstates the DA at Hogwarts.

43. WHAT'S IN DUMBLEDORE'S WILL?

Dumbledore's Will has left Harry the first golden Snitch he caught and the Sword of Gryffindor. It left Hermione a book of fairy tales containing the story of the Deathly Hallows. It left Ron the Deluminator Dumbledore used in the beginning of SS.

44. WAS SOMEONE ELSE IN THE HOUSE WHEN HARRY AND HIS PARENTS WERE ATTACKED?

There was a cat....?

45. ARE HARRY AND VOLDEMORT RELATED?

They are related through the three Peverell brothers who made the Hallows. Voldemort through the Gaunts is a descendent of the one who made the resurrection stone in his ring and Harry is related to the third brother who made his cloak, the third hallow.

46. WHY DID DUMBLEDORE HAVE THE INVISIBILITY CLOAK WHEN HARRY'S PARENTS DIED?

James gave it to him to examine since DD believes that it's one of the three hallows.

47. WHAT'S UP WITH GRINDELWALD?

Grindelwald was friends with DD and both of them made plans to find the Hallows and rule the muggles. Later an argument between Aberforth, Grindelwald and Albus ended with the death of Albus's sister. Grindelwald runs off after this and steals the Elder Wand from Gregorovich. Dumbledore later confronts him and takes the wand from Grindelwald and throws him in his own gulag.

Also, He was friends with Dumbledore since both wanted to find the Deathly Hallows.
He got one of the Hallows (the Elder Wand) and when Dumbledore fought him the wand passed on to him (Dumbledore) and Grindelwald was imprisioned in the prison he had built for his enemies. He lived there until Voldemort found him while looking for the wand (present day during HPatDH). When he told Voldemort he didn't have it anymore, Voldemort killed him.

48. WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE US COVER?

That is what is left of either the Great Hall or the entrance courtyard in Hogwarts, I can't quite tell which. It is the absolute final battle, in which Harry and Voldemort are fighting. Harry taunts Voldemort for awhile, tells him exactly where he goes wrong. Voldemort puts up a brave front, but is clearly scared. Voldemort has "The Elder Wand," which is supposedly unbeatable. It can only be used by "the true owner," which you can only become by defeating the previous owner (usually by sneaking up on them or something, I guess, because it is unbeatable). Voldemort believes he is the true owner, because he stole it from Dumbledore, then killed Severus Snape (the person who killed Dumbledore, and thus would be the true owner). Harry, however, informs him that Draco Malfoy was the true owner because he Expelliarumus'd it out of Dumbledore's hands, and that makes Harry the true owner because Harry defeated Malfoy earlier. Voldemort Avada Kedavra's, Harry Expelliarmus's, the spells meet. Because Harry is the true owner of the wand, the Avada Kedavra backfires, the Expelliarmus hits and throws the wand up in the air. Voldemort is killed and Harry catches the wand. Voldemort, whom we assumed was warding something off in that picture, is actually dead and falling backwards.

It has also been suggested that the US Cover reflects this passage in the book:

"But he understood at last what Dumbledore had been trying to tell him. It was, he thought, the difference between being dragged into the arena to face a battle to the death and walking into the arena with your head held high. Some people, perhaps, would say that there was little to choose between the two ways, but Dumbledore knew--and so do I, thought Harry,--that there was all the difference in the world."

49. WHAT ARE LILY AND JAMES' PROFESSIONS?

Never mentioned. (Mentioned in an AOL chat at one point by Rowling that James inherited a load of money and didn't have to work.)

50. WHAT DID DUDLEY SEE WHEN HE WAS ATTACKED BY DEMENTORS?

Never mentioned exactly what he saw.

51. WHAT ABOUT DEMENTORS?

They show up at least in Hogsmeade and in the forbidden forest during the final battle. Oh, they also show up before that in the MoM. And, they are seen in a village Harry visits to try to steal food.

52. DO WE LEARN DETAILS ABOUT THE PROFESSOR'S LIVES?

Only Snape and Dumbledore.

53. IS TEDDY LUPIN A METAMORPHAGUS, A WEREWOLF, OR BOTH, AND WHY IS HE AT THE HOGWARTS PLATFORM IN THE EPILOGUE?

Lupin does says that he changes his hair color, so it can be assumed that he is a metamorphagus. It is only presumable that he is not a werewolf.

He's at the platform seeing Victoire off.

54. SORTING HAT INCONSISTENCY?

Yes, the Sorting Hat gets set on fire and yes, it then later shows up in the epilogue. We can only assume that this is a newly enchanted Sorting Hat, or the other Sorting Hat was repaired.

Also, this is a possibility: In the final duel with Voldemort, Harry tells him that the spells he's casting with the Elder Wand aren't holding since Harry died to protect everyone from Voldemort (p738) and also that Voldemort's not the true master of the wand (p 742 US edition). Neville is able to break the Body Bind and is also not consumed with flame as well so I'm assuming that the flames don't really destroy the Sorting Hat.

55. I THOUGHT GRIPHOOK TOOK THE SWORD OF GRYFFINDOR, AND IF SO, HOW DID IT COME OUT OF THE SORTING HAT?

The Sorting Hat can summon the sword from wherever it may be, presumably.

56. IF HARRY'S A HORCRUX, HOW DID HE LIVE?

The blood connection he had with Voldemort allowed him to get AK'd and survive for the second time. Voldy's piece of soul was not so lucky.

57. HAGRID?

Hagrid is still gamekeeper at Hogwarts. In the beginning of the book, he is the one who takes Harry to safety from Privet Drive on Sirius' infamous motorcycle. At the end of the book, he is also the one to carry the supposedly dead body of Harry back to Hogwarts.

58. HERMIONE SAYS SHE ERASES THE MEMORIES OF HER PARENTS, THEN SHE LATER CONTRADICTS HERSELF AND SAYS SHE HAS NEVER PERFORMED A MEMORY CHARM. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?

It's been speculated that the spell performed on her parents was a complex Confundus charm, whereas the "Memory Charm" she later refers to is the Obliviating Charm.

59. WHAT ABOUT THE INCONSISTENCY IN HERMIONE'S MIDDLE NAME?

JKR once said it was Jane in an interview, but in the book it's Jean. Obviously, she either misspoke the first time or this is a typographical error.

60. WHAT ARE THE TWELVE USES OF DRAGON'S BLOOD?

This is never revealed.

61. IF THE ELDER WAND MUST BE "WON" IN ORDER FOR IT TO RECOGNIZE ITS NEW OWNER, HOW DOES GRINDELWALD BECOME A RIGHTFUL OWNER SEEING AS HE STOLE IT FROM GREGOROVITCH? ALSO, WHEN HARRY SAID HE WAS PUTTING THE ELDER WAND "BACK WHERE IT GOES", DID HE MEAN IN DUMBLEDORE'S TOMB?

Grindelwald steals it yes, but he stuns Gregorovitch to get it, thereby "winning" it. And yes, I assumed it was going back in the tomb.

62. DID REGULUS KNOW THAT THE LOCKET WAS A HORCRUX?

Yes, see HBP.

63. WHAT IS THAT BABY THING IN KING'S CROSS?

I personally (lamppostofdeath) believe that this is the piece of Voldemort that resided in Harry. Others assert the following:

This was actually Voldemort himself, that was the piece of soul that still resided in Voldemort. Voldemort woke up at the same time Harry did, so I assumed they both went to King's Cross when Voldemort AK'd Harry.

64. OLIVER WOOD TOUCHES THE SNITCH WITH HIS BARE HANDS WHEN HE TEACHES HARRY ABOUT QUIDDITCH, SO HOW COULD HARRY BE THE FIRST PERSON TO TOUCH IT?

The snitch used by Wood was presumably a practice snitch. They would use a new snitch every game to prevent tampering.

I know this isn't anywhere near everything, I have left out a lot. But for a question to be frequently asked, someone has to ask it. Comment with questions, I'll add them to the list. I'm not always immediately around, but I swear if you comment, someone will probably answer in good time,

Not to sound like an ass, but why don't you date the entry so it's always on top and then just edit as needed? That way people will notice it first and not ask a question already here.

Unfortunately, you cannot do that in communities, even if you are a mod.

She doesn't say it does happen, just that it might.

Hey there! I really appreciate all the hard work you've done with this!

If you stop reposting it each time and just update this one from now on and then link to it, I can put it on the links list. ;-)
